What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a clinical form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process of making art to support mental, emotional, and psychological well-being. Guided by a trained art therapist, individuals explore thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to express with words. It is a powerful, evidence-based approach used in various settings — from mental health clinics to schools — to help people process trauma, reduce anxiety, build self-awareness, and foster healing through creativity.

Who is Claire

With an Honours in Fine Art (Wits), a Post Graduate Diploma in Education with distinction (UNISA), Honours in Art Therapy with distinction (UJ) and Master in Art Therapy with distinction (UJ), I am an HPCSA-registered Art Therapist with a deep commitment to supporting individuals on their unique healing journeys.

With a special interest in working with neurodivergent individuals, those navigating chronic health challenges, and complex family systems, I offer a grounded, compassionate space for exploration and growth.

The art therapy sessions combine art-making and talk therapy to support embodied processing, allowing clients to connect with their inner experiences in a safe, creative, and empowering way. I work with people from all walks of life, tailoring each session to the individual or group’s needs, and always meeting clients where they are — with care, curiosity, and respect.

Why Choose Art Therapy?

Art therapy offers a unique, creative pathway to healing – especially for those who find it difficult to express themselves through words alone. By engaging in the process of making art, individuals can access deeper emotions, memories, and insights that might remain hidden in traditional talk therapy. It’s not about artistic skill, but about using colour, shape, and image to explore inner experiences in a safe and supportive space.

Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply curious about a different way of working, art therapy can help you connect more fully with yourself, process complex emotions, and discover new ways of understanding and coping. It’s especially helpful for children, neurodivergent individuals, trauma survivors, and anyone who relates to a more embodied or non-verbal approach to healing. Art skills are NOT a pre-requisite for art therapy as the focus is on the process of art creation.
